Scilly Boats!

I am no poet, but once you see the ruggedly beautiful Isles of Scilly surrounded by their shimmering indigo seas and intense cerulean skies it is hard not to slip into poetic language! It is also hard to hold back the urge to paint when every view in every direction forms such a glorious vista. I have been visiting the isles for many years and my two latest “wide-screen” oil paintings take in two of these breathtaking vistas.

The Island has a strong tradition of pilot gig boat racing and one gorgeous July evening last year I was treated to this magnificent sunset on St Martins. The men’s gig rowing teams hold inter-island races every Friday evening in the season. On this occasion their gigs were hauled up on the white sands near Lower Town quay. The crews were dutifully celebrating and commiserating in the nearby Seven Stones Inn prior to retiring at dusk to their respective island gig sheds.

I love this view of St Mary’s Harbour – always heaving with all sorts of small boats. This fresh mid-morning scene looks from the middle of St Mary’s Pool towards Holgates Green. The ferries, fishing boats and pleasure craft all proudly facing out to sea and jostling at their moorings. The iconic Buzza Tower, once a wind-mill, can be seen on Buzza Hill in the background and the infamous island bus can also be seen waiting for passengers in front of the granite cottages of the Lower Strand.
